The Raising A Reader® mission is to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding and early literacy skills critical for school success by engaging parents in a routine of daily “book cuddling” with their children from birth to age five. This mission addresses a national need for effective early literacy programs. One in three children entering kindergarten lacks basic pre-reading skills, which are proven to be a key factor in determining high-school graduation and lifelong success. NPR’s This American Life recently profiled the early literacy work of the Harlem Children’s Zone, which shares many Lapsits’ program goals. Here’s the description from NPR’s website:
Act One. Harlem Renaissance.
Paul Tough reports on the Harlem Children’s Zone, and its CEO and president, Geoffrey Canada. Among the project’s many facets is Baby College, an 8-week program where young parents and parents-to-be learn how to help their children get the education they need to be successful. Tough’s just-published book about Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem’s Children Zone is called Whatever It Takes. You can see a slideshow of more photographs from the project here. (30 and 1⁄2 minutes)
The program, available for download for free this week is only 95 cents after that.

Lapsits is grateful for several hundred classic preschool books that Fiction-Addiction’s owner, Jill Hendrix, donated to us prior to her move. We immediately found homes where they’ll be loved. We hope we’re creating a new generation of fiction addicts for your business!!
